If you are planning on buying a home, getting a sewer inspection is a really good idea! Oftentimes, if the homeowners have lived there for multiple years and not had problems with the sewer, they assume that there are no problems and don’t get it checked out.
This is the main reason why buyers who purchase a home and don’t get a sewer inspection – because the homeowner says that there haven’t been problems – find out that the lines have major damage and have to completely re-do the sewer lines.
If you already own a home, getting a sewer inspection is necessary for the same reason that buyers should get them.
Just because you haven’t noticed any problems to date doesn’t mean that there aren’t underlying defects that are getting worse as time passes! It is better to be safe than sorry, and a sewer inspection costs a fraction of the price that repairing or replacing a sewer will cost.
